Shopping Guide
Putting ChangeOne into action at the grocery store is a snap with our guide to sensible shopping lists, which will ensure you're never without the essentials.

Chances are you already have many of the ingredients for the meals in your Meal Plan. They're drawn from basic provisions. As you think about your shopping strategies, take some time to look at the list of Kitchen Essentials. You'll be referring to it often as you get comfortable with stocking a ChangeOne kitchen.

Our meals call for lots of perishable foods, especially fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products, so it's important to have a checklist to track these items and avoid waste.

You can use the two shopping lists we've provided to help you track your perishables.

Grocery stores stock produce separately from dairy, meats, and seafood, so start your lists with that in mind. It's also helpful to divide the perishables into two groups: long-life items and short-life items.

Long-life items are those that can be stored in a cool pantry or in the refrigerator and will keep for a few weeks. Plan to check these items and restock as needed about twice a month. Short-life items will keep only a few days in the refrigerator and are best bought and used for a specific recipe. Check these once a week and restock as needed.

Okay, now it's time to tackle the whole store. Use the following shopping guidelines to stay on top of the master Kitchen Essentials list.

Monthly: Around the same time every month check, and restock your kitchen staples.

Twice monthly: Check and replenish long-life produce, dairy, meats, and seafood as needed.

Weekly: Pick up short-life items for that week's meals.

A few more general guidelines that will simplify your shopping strategy even further:

  • Plan a week's recipes, then check your pantry and refrigerator for items that you will need that week and make sure they're on your list.
  • You're the best judge of how much you'll need of each item, based on the number of people you're cooking for and the substitutions you make.
  • You can substitute just about any fruit or vegetable for another, so buy the ones that are in season.
  • If you find you're not going to use fresh meat, poultry, or fish within a day after your buy it, freeze it.
